Diwali is held in October or November every year. It is an important festival for Hindus and is popular with people of other religions, too. It is celebrated for five days. To get ready for the festival, houses are cleaned and painted, and people often put flowers on their doors.
Each day of the festival has a special meaning, but the third day of the festival is the most important. In the evening, people put special lights in their homes and along the streets and enjoy watching fireworks.
They open all the doors and windows of their homes to welcome the goddess of wealth, Lankshmi. People hope that she will visit them on this day.

多くの日本人はクリスマスや中国の新年のようなお祭りについて聞いたことがあるが、インドのディワリという祭りについて知っている日本人は多くはないだろう。ディワリは明かりの祭りとも呼ばれ、インドでは最大級のお祭りです。
ディワリは毎年１０月か１１月に行われます。これはヒンズー教の人々にとってとても重要であり、その他の宗教の人々にも大変有名です。お祭りは５日間に渡って祝われます。お祭りの準備のために、人々は家を綺麗に掃除したり色を塗りなおしたり、ドアに花を飾ったりします。祭りは一日ごとに特別な意味を有していますが、３日目は最も重要です。夕方からは皆が特別に用意した明かりを点し、家や道路を飾り、そして花火を楽しみます。
皆はドアを全て開放し、健康の神であるランクシュミを迎えます。皆ランクシュミの訪れを願っているのです。ディワリは贈り物をするときでもあり、子供たちは家族からのお菓子などのプレゼントを楽しみにしています。男の子はお姉さんや妹にお祭りの最後の日にプレゼントを贈ります。この日は兄弟姉妹にとって特別な日なのです。
