『鳩山由紀夫首相の退陣によって、４日の午後に民主党の新代表に菅直人氏が選出された。また、衆参両院の首相指名選挙で過半数の票を獲得し、第９４代首相に選出された。鳩山首相は退陣前に国民から普天間基地問題等で多くの批判を買っていた。そのため、菅新首相に対しては大きな期待がかかっているとともに、不安も感じている。国民の願いとしては、自分の言葉に責任を持ってほしい、もっと国民のことを国民の目線で考えてほしいと思う。日本経済が不安定な今、子供の育児や教育などの社会問題、農業などの地域問題、普天間基地などの外交問題など解決すべき課題は多く残っている。菅内閣が発足したばかりではあるが、菅新首相には長期的な視野での政策、対策をしていただきたいと強く思う。』

"As a result of recent resignation from the office by the Premier Yukio
Hatoyama, Mr. Naoto Kan was chosen as the new representative for
Democratic Party on 4th June afternoon. Furthermore, he was elected
to be the 94th Prime Minister of Japan following the vote at both lower
and upper houses of the Diet by acquiring majority vote at the Prime
Minister’s nomination ballot. Due to heavy criticism to ex P.M. Hatoyama,
following the US army Futenma base issue etc., there are high expectation
as well as some anxiety to the new P.M. Kan. Many Japanese hopes the
new PM to take responsibility to his own words and also to consider
policies from the Japanese citizens’ point of view. Under the unstable
economic situation in Japan, there are also many issues that need
resolving, such as social problems of child care and education, local
issues such as agricultural problem, and diplomatic issues such as Futenma
Base. Although Kan government has just been launched, we hope that
PM Kan will implement policies and measures based on long term view
points."

In the afternoon of June 4, Naoto Kan was elected the new president of Democratic Pary of Japan after Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's resignation. He was later voted in by the Diet as the 94th Prime Mister. Prior to his resignation, Prime Minister Hatoyama was widely unpopular among many fronts including Futenma Military Base. Citizens' expectations for Prime Minister Kan are high while many uncertainties are looming. Japanese citizens are hoping for someone who acts responsibly for his words and sees many issues from ordinary people's views. There are many issues to surmount including economic instability, social issues such as child care and education, regional agriculture and Futenma Base on the diplomatic front. At the inception of the new cabinet, I would very much hope to see Prime Minister Kan to come up with policies from a long-term perspective.
