What if you could take people's trash and eventually sell it -bacl to them in a different form?
That sounds like a pipe dream, but EcoScraps, a company that composts and resells food waste, picks up 30 tons of old fruit and vegetables from stores across Utah and Arizona every day.
"The sales process is super-easy for us," says Dan Blake, the company's 23-year-old CEO.
"It not only saves stores money, but stores can buy the compost and sell it back to consumers."
It all started with a plate of waffles at an all-you-can-eat buffet in Provo, Utah.
In 2009, when he was a university student, Dan was having breakfast there with his brother.
After he was stuffed, he realized the pile of food left on his plate would just go into the trash.
He started thinking about all the food waste just from this restaurant, which had paid to buy and make the food and then had to pay again to have it taken away.
It just didn't make sense to him.
And then he had his aha moment.
He thought, "What if I could buy someone's garbage, process it, and sell it to someone else?"
