①In fact, the shopkeepers didn’t stay angry for long.
②This was because their sales began to increase under Mayor Lerner’s new policy .
③More and more people were attracted by the green and pleasant space in the street.
④While they were there, they spent money in the shops.
⑤When shopkeepers in other parts of Curitiba (クリティバ) saw what was happening, they wanted to have the same situation.
⑥They began to ask the mayor to create “Flower Streets” in front of their shops, too.
⑦As the original Flower Street was extended, it attracted larger and larger crowds of people.
⑧It is now called November 15 Street and has become a symbol of the city.
⑨It is the pride and joy of Curitiba’s citizens.
⑩After this success, Lerner turned to the problem of public transportation.
⑪This problem is often one of the biggest in modern citiesーand Curitiba was no exception.
⑫The main street in the city consisted of three parallel lanes.
⑬The mayor took the one in the middle and saved it for buses only.
⑭He also made the buses bigger by connecting some of them together.
⑮They were then able to hold up to 270 passengers eachーfar more than before.
⑯This greatly improved the situation with public transportation in the city.
