american indepedence was perfectuly timed to take advantage of this new shift in emphasis in th western mind, The problems of subduing a continent had a lot of more to do with the world of lsaac Newton and his followers than with the world of John Calvin and Martin Luther, as reflected in the religious
obsessions of earlier centuries. Americans grasped at technological innovations with an appetite far exceeding even their rapidly industrializing cousins in Europe. Their seemingly inexhaustible natural resources encouraged Americans not only to use what they found but to use it extravagantly. The cotton farmers of the South preferred to seek new farmland to the west rather than fertilize the exhausted coastal soil. Similarly, their descendants were to use up forests and ore deposits, ignoreing consevation practices, but simply moving on to another frontier. According to historian David potter, Amerrcans followed frontiers which promised material abundance wheater this abundance was to come from the soil or from factories. They developed a set of habits which prepared them fully for the age of overproduction,
consumer pressures, and disposable objects ranging from empty bottles entire neighborhoods.
