During that period the civil rights movement was born. This started in the 1950s, and some people believe that it ended in 1965, when the Voting Rights Act was passed. But the effects of the movement are really still being felt. The civil rights movement helped Afro-Americans in many ways, of course. It ended segregation in the South. The government declared racial discrimination illegal. And more black Americans became politically active. It also affected other Americans, though. They now saw that the United States was actually made up of many kinds of people. Some of these people belonged to groups that were also facing discrimination, the American Indians and the handicapped, for example. Many Americans thought such discrimination wrong and decided to fight it. They asked their politicians to take steps to help those minorities. And, by doing so, they had their faith in the American system restored. Most Americans now respect the rights of minority groups. They try not to use words or expressions that might insult such people. If you visit the United States, you should act the same way.
